Low-Lead Brass Regulations in 2025: What OEMs Need to Know

Lead content in brass plumbing components is a tightening regulatory area, and the trajectory is one-directional: more markets are moving to lower lead limits, and more product categories within those markets are being pulled under the regulation. This note summarises the state of play as of 2025 and the practical alloy implications for OEMs sourcing brass parts.

United States — NSF 372 & Section 1417

NSF 372 and the US Safe Drinking Water Act Section 1417 set a 0.25% maximum weighted-average lead content for the wetted surfaces of plumbing components used for drinking-water service. This effectively excludes CW614N and CW617N from US potable-water programs, and pushes OEMs toward low-lead (CW602N, with caveats) or lead-free silicon brass (CW724R) for compliant parts.

California Proposition 65

California's Proposition 65 sets stricter warning thresholds and product-specific labelling requirements. For brass plumbing components sold in California, lead-free silicon brass (CW724R) is the safer default; even nominally compliant low-lead brasses sometimes need additional risk assessment for Prop 65.

European Union — Drinking Water Directive (recast 2020/2184)

The recast EU Drinking Water Directive, with positive-list deadlines through 2026–2027, is progressively tightening on metallic materials in drinking-water contact. The trajectory points clearly toward CW724R-class alloys for new EU drinking-water plumbing programs.

Other regions

WRAS (UK), KTW (Germany), ACS (France), and emerging Asian / Middle-East standards continue to evolve. For any new global OEM plumbing program, the safest default is lead-free CW724R, with low-lead CW602N as a fallback for cost-sensitive regional programs.

Practical implication

For OEMs designing a new plumbing component in 2025, default to CW724R as the alloy of record — the price difference vs standard brass is modest (roughly 8–15% on raw material), and it gives you the longest regulatory runway. Specify CW602N only when cost is the deciding constraint and the target market explicitly accepts it.
